I’m working on a new writing project, which you may have heard about if you are member of my Facebook fan club. A Spell of Rowans is a contemporary Magical Realism story concerning a family of three siblings who must deal with the fallout created by the death of their mother.

I was cleaning my brushes when the phone rang for the third time. Wiping my hands on a towel, I tapped the phone, putting my sister on the speakerphone to hear her announcement.

“She’s dead.”

I thought I was past the need for confirmation but asked, “It was around 1:30 in the morning, wasn’t it?”

“Yes.” There was a pause before Philippa said, her voice breaking, “Ding dong.”

Like many creatives, sometimes I get inspired by something that comes out of nowhere. I was going through some old family photos and suddenly this story sprung into my mind and consumed me. I had to write it now!

I had finished Price of a Rose and was waiting for the editor to return the re-worked draft to me so I thought I’d play with this story for awhile. In two weeks, I had more then 30,000 words written (about half of the finished book)! This was the fastest I’ve ever written a story!

The story flowed out of me in a huge rush to get down into words. It’s a passion project for sure and means a lot to me personally.

The preliminary feedback from the first group of Alpha Readers has been really good also.

Alpha readers (who see the raw story) are my most trusted group of readers who have been with me from the very beginning. They have been faithful with their support, honest feedback, and communication. To become one, you must be a beta reader for several books/stories and shown a track record of feedback and assistance. Beta readers (those seeing the 2nd generation of the story) are selected from my newsletter.

A Spell of Rowans would probably be most like Granny Starseed and The Wicked Wolves of Windsor in The Wicked Wolves of Windsor and other fairytales. The setting is contemporary with a touch of magic, however, the themes are darker like in my Red Riding Hood story. After that all comparisons end.

In genre, I’d compare it to Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman and books by Sarah Addison Allen. Unlike my other books, this one is for 18+, because it deals with childhood trauma and has several disturbing scenes of abuse.

This book is going to be phenomenal. For that reason I haven’t decided yet on a release date. The first step is to meet with my editor and talk over the book and how she feels about it. I also plan on a bigger release splash for I feel this could be my breakthrough book!

I’ll have more news here, in the newsletter, and in my Facebook Fan group as the publication plan unfolds.
