I got a lot more read this week than I thought! Woohoo! Reviews are up but here is what I was reading this last week.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the title and the cover, but gosh, I LOVED this snarky fairytale! It really is a gem. This is a nice blend of contemporary ideas that will appeal to readers but with that solid fairytale foundation that makes it relateable.
I think older teens would specially like this (though adults will also). Some themes I would put for 14+ as sex is mentioned (though happens off screen).
Based on the remarkable true story of a freed African American slave who returned to Virginia at the onset of the Civil War to spy on the Confederates.
Interesting historical read which I give 5 stars. My only caveat is it wasn’t as gritty as I was expecting. It was a little too “pleasant” – a little too white savior, however for fiction based on history, it feels historically accurate.
What a huge disappointment. The first chapter was interesting but it all went downhill from there. Obviously written fast, there is a lot of repeated phrases and information that makes the reader go “duh, you already wrote that.”
The hero was a zero, the heroine too busy crying over not having a beau or a dress, and the mystery was limpid. The author has obvious talent but she needs to slow down and use it.
Each Friday (when I have time) I post my current reads and what I’ve reviewed. If you want on the review list, I prioritize those that personally interest me and books by those who follow me on social media.
